Christening the Virtual Instruction Sloop: Use of Horizon Wimba to Deliver Synchronous Library Instruction to Learners at a Distance

Presenters: Dana Longley and Ian Hertz (Empire State)

Abstract:

In January 2007, Empire State College delivered its first library orientation training session to students at a distance using Horizon Wimba multimedia virtual classroom technology. Wimba provides a synchronous, interactive, online learning environ-ment with audio, chat, whiteboard and application sharing capabilities. We will review the steps carried out in compiling the instructional content of the session and the planning and use of this technology within that context. Obstacles encountered and lessons learned will also be discussed, as well as the potential for expanded use of this tool, given the geographically dispersed nature of the college's faculty and student body.
